 151. Carrizo Plain National Monument

  • Early April 4-10  for Cuyama Buckhom for bread, music, wildflower
  • close to SLO, 200 miles, 4 hours drive
153. Hungry Valley SVRA
  • 70 miles north of LA, two wild flower spots and gold mine
  • 112 miles, 2.3 hours drive, getting closer to Bakersfield
154. Crystal Lake and Sante Fe Dam
  • San Gabriel Blvd, north and south
152. Franklin Canyon Park
  • 1.5-2.5 miles
  • Lake Drive and Franklin Canyon Drive
  • To the east of the Topanga canyon, 66 miles drive, 1.5 hours, google destination for Franklin Canyon Park Main Parking lot, free parking
153. Cherry U-Pick Season, most of these places are 2 hours drive
  • Villa Del Sol Orchard (little over 2 hours)

  • Lover's point park, walk to the north to the lighthouse, about 3 miles on flat grounds; starting address at 631 Ocean View Blvd, Pacific Grove; to the Asilomar state park, Aquarium, and Old Fishman Wharf for a morning run - a very good route, 2 hours
  • Overall Monterey feels cold, aging, low clouds and gloomy
  • The great tide pool, can dig stars, wait till low tide, walk along the big rock; 1400 Sunset Dr, Pacific Grove
  • Eat at - Phil's fish market and eatery at moss landing (seafood in cioppino, seafood
  • Moss landing - beach was pretty with large waves along the industry warehouse, about 20 miles north of Monterey, must go if in the area
155. Pacific Coastal Highways (7/2-3/2022)
  • 17th miles entrance - Pacific Grove Gate, 17 Miles Drive; stop at 3. Spanish Bay Beach 7. Bird Rock 10. Cypress Point Lookout 11. Crocker Grove, 12 the lone cypress (the most famous shot of the Monterey picture) 13 ghost trees at Pescadero point 14 pebble beach 15  visitor center (can use the coastal access to go into the porch to see pebble beach), then turn at the Carmel entrance into carmel
  • Carmel by the sea
    • The Del Mar parking lot (very busy, but a small beach, not worth it, free parking), located at the base of Ocean Avenue near the beach.  NO large vehicles over 6 tons, 20 feet in length or over 7 1/2 feet tall allowed at this location
    • Park at the Ocean drive, lots of parking space along the long drive; set direction to the Flank Lloyd beach house, beautiful stretches with characteristic houses; must visit
    • Vista Lobos public parking lot, located on Torres Street and 3rd Avenue 
    • Center median streets and curbside spaces on Junipero Avenue between 3rd and 5th Avenues.
    • The Sunset Center north parking lot located on 8th Avenue between Mission and San Carlos Streets 
    • Most residential streets outside the Central Business District (didn't go into the town)
  • Soberances Point for yellow flower beds - the beach side is very very beautiful (that has a bridge with many stairs) but on the other side is the trail going into the mountains (need hiking shows and walking sticks).  It is a state park
  • Big Sur Station (passed it, not sure what this has but certainly many of the camping sites, lodging and cafeteria quick eating places)
  • Bixby creek bridge - stop at castle rock viewpoint for picture; it was early before big sur; park in the dirt entry zone is fine but the views of the bridge is clear but not good for picture's sake), impressive bridge, must stop
  • Partington Cove (didn't stop or see the sign)
  • Mcway falls - Park on the road and walk into the state park (cars will cost $10, not worth it at all, but can walk to the half mountain place to see the falls more clearly, but again, not worth it.  There's an overlook area on the road to the state park, that is already very good, again park on the road)
  • Pfeiffer beach, $12 fee, purple sands (probably not worth it, didn't stop there.  It's early at the big sur station)
    • Pfeiffer falls trail, 1.5 miles, $10 fee
    • Shuttle to the purple sands, $10
  • Elephant seal vista point (saw only a few seals, large parking lot)
  • Hearst Castle (see separate journal)
  • Pismo beach
  • Lompoc (see separate journal)
  • Solvang (see separate journal)
  • Santa Barbara, chromatic gate, Stearns wharf
  • Malibu
  • Eat 
    • Monterey - Phil's fish market and eatery at moss landing (seafood in cioppino, seafood Mexican wraps and Mediterranean pasta, all very delicious); turn left into the harbor industry warehouse area
    • Lompoc - Bowl; chow ya; zoes Hawaiin; shin poke; poke chef; brooks burgers; florianos mexican food, aloha bbq, Cajun kitchen cafe (2pm), habit burger, Thai Cuisine (not very good)
    • Santa Barbara - LA super Mexican before 11am or after 2pm; order 16; 7; 18
  • Missed these areas
    • Generally big sur
    • Ragged Point Inn, 3.5 stars; Ragged Point, Lucia lodge
    • Pfeiffer Falls trail / beach ($10 parking)
    • San Simeon where the seals and hearst castle is
    • Point lobos state reserve near carmel by the sea

157. Museum of Latin America Art (MOLAA) at Downtown Long Beach (9/17/2022)
  • Smithsonian free museum Saturday, register by email to receive 2 free tickets; there are about 6 museums to choose from in the area
  • MOLAA in the downtown long beach, large parking lot in the vicinity, otherwise street parking
  • There is an exhibition and there is a sculpture garden.  The exhibition has many of geometry-flavored art demonstrations.  It is a very small collection and the garden is small and depleted.  The quick walk-through can be done in 15 minutes.
  • Downtown long beach has a culture of being different, like the Venice beach
  • MOLAA free Sundays, $15/$10
